CBD Guide: Benefits, Side Effects, and How to Take It

Cannabidiol, commonly referred to as "CBD," took over the health and wellness market in 2018 after the United States Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived products. In this bill, "hemp,” which is defined as Cannabis sativa and derivatives of Cannabis with low concentrations of THC (the psychoactive compound scientifically known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), was removed from the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. 

 

CBD is just one of the cannabinoids found in the female flowers of hemp plants and the cannabis sativa plant.

 

CBD eventually became popular when scientific studies showed promise for its ability to reduce seizures in epileptic patients, leading the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to approve the CBD drug Epidiolex for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe pediatric diseases. The approval of Epidiolex paved the way to a better quality of life for both the patients and their families, marking a milestone for both CBD and hemp products

 

In addition to epilepsy, CBD is also being studied for possible efficacy for a myriad of health conditions, from social anxiety disorder to insomnia. Although more human studies need to be done, many people are hopeful. 

Sure, CBD sounds like a great addition to any person's wellness routine. But before you decide to add CBD to your wellness plan, you should do a bit of research. For example, most researchers (and CBD experts) suggest starting with a low dose and gradually working your way up. While there isn't an evidence-based step-by-step guide to CBD dosage, you should consider your body weight and individual body chemistry before making a purchase. Here’s where sourcing, process type and quality come in to play. 

 

A quick tip: Be wary of fake or low-quality CBD products; a low-quality knock-off won't offer the same health benefits of a high quality CBD. To do this, pay attention to where and how it's made, where and how the hemp was grown, and only choose brands that offer third-party lab results. Only the highest-quality CBD products will check all of these boxes. You can find this information right on the label. 

 

Hempseed oil, for example, is an entirely different product. Hempseed oil, although nutritious and loaded with Vitamin E, doesn't have enough cannabinoids to qualify as a CBD product. CBD oil, on the other hand, is produced from the aerial plant parts—AKA its flowers, leaves, or stems.

How does CBD work?  

Recently it was discovered that our bodies have an intelligent network of cell receptors called the endocannabinoid system, this system can help you maintain homeostasis (balance). Homeostasis enables organisms to survive in continually changing environments. Homeostasis affects everything from your physical health to your mood. 

To activate the endocannabinoid system and achieve optimum balance, your body needs cannabinoids. Your body can produce some on its own, often, however, those trace amounts aren’t enough to keep your endocannabinoid system functioning properly. When the “full-spectrum” of cannabinoids are present, the cannabinoids attach to the cell receptors in your endocannabinoid system and send them an activation signal, which allows your endocannabinoid system to fulfill its function of promoting homeostasis throughout your body.

 

CBD attaches to the cannabinoid receptors in our endocannabinoid system. It also triggers the serotonin receptors inside of our brain and increases the production of one of our important neurotransmitters, anandamide. Anandamide, whose name is taken from the Sanskrit word for Bliss, is an endogenous (internally produced) compound that binds to the endocannabinoid receptors. 

 

Serotonin, on the other hand, is organically produced in the human body and it has been coined a “feel good” chemical. Serotonin reduces anxiety and promotes happiness, while anandamide can regulate motivation and pleasure.

 

Full-Spectrum CBD

Remember when we made a note about CBD quality? Well, the best kind of CBD oil is full-spectrum. Full-spectrum CBD provides users with what is known as the “entourage effect”—meaning all of the cannabinoids work together synergistically.

 

More than 100 different cannabinoids have been identified in the hemp plant—likely more are still waiting to be discovered. CBD works best when it's in the company of other cannabinoids, such as CBD-A, CBN, CBG and so on. This is what full-spectrum means: that all of the cannabinoids are present in the product. 

 

This is in contrast to CBD isolate, which is chemically isolated and then stabilized for use in products. CBD isolate does not provide the “entourage effect.”

 

For many people, one of the advantages of full-spectrum products is that they contain less than 0.3% of THC. Trace amounts of THC contribute to the “entourage effect," which we described earlier. But, don't worry: These trace amounts of THC will not have a psychoactive effect.

First-Time CBD Buyers: Things to Watch Out For 

The FDA doesn't regulate the sales of CBD, so before using any new CBD product, it's imperative that you look at the company's lab reports. Lab reports give you all the information you need to make a sound purchasing choice. If the product in question contains high CBD content or even a small amount of THC, you'll be able to see that information on the lab report. 

 

Looking at the list of ingredients is crucial for determining the way the CBD and other cannabinoids were extracted from the plant. There are different methods for extraction, with some being cleaner than others. A "clean" CBD product, for example, is free of residual chemicals. 

 

Solvent extraction (uses chemicals such as ethanol, butane, propane, and isopropyl) and can often leave the final product with residual chemicals—which can be harmful to your overall health. CO2 extraction can produce a good CBD extract, however, this method can sometimes result in a low-quality CBD product.

 

CBD isolate is chemically isolated from all the other cannabinoids and then stabilized with more chemicals, resulting in a chemical-laden product. Sometimes isolates undergo a secondary process to scrub residual chemicals but this leaves the product highly processed. "Spagyric extraction" is a  buzzword that refers to a wide range of processes, none of which are standardized or regulated. 

 

The moral of this story: Finding out about the company, its sourcing, and philosophy isn't just a good idea, it could save you from ingesting harmful chemicals.

 

CBD's Physical Health Benefits

While many studies are currently underway about the health benefits of CBD, one thing that is certain is that it supports optimal health. 

CBD oil contains both omega-3 and omega-6 linoleic acid. These essential fatty acids help the body fully absorb the cannabinoids that are present in our organic CBD oil. Omega-3 linoleic acid and omega-6 linoleic acid have proven to be beneficial for our overall health. These fatty acids have also been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease and minimize symptoms of ADHD in children.

 

Possible Side Effects of CBD 

Clinical research has shown that in rare cases, CBD oil may trigger a few side effects, including changes in appetite, changes in mood, dry mouth, dizziness, and drowsiness. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also avoid taking CBD and consult with their health care provider. 

As always, if you're considering CBD use as a viable pain relief or treatment option, be sure to speak with your doctor first. Why? Because CBD has the potential to interact with certain medications, including antiarrhythmic drugs such as quinidine and antipsychotic drugs like Orap.

 

Potential Risks Associated with CBD Use

If you're required to take a drug test for work, then you should definitely keep the unique properties of full-spectrum products in mind. Although the trace amounts of THC inside of full-spectrum products are highly unlikely to trigger a positive drug test, that may not be a risk you’re willing to take. The best course of action is to check in with your company’s policy. 

 

How to Take CBD Oil

CBD is a person-dependent dietary supplement, this means each individual will have a different experience with it. That's why we recommend beginning with small doses and increasing the amount over a period of time as desired. 

 

Quick note: It is possible to take too much CBD. While an overdose isn't fatal, you should still use your preferred CBD oil product with care. 

 

When using Marigold Botanicals' organic CBD oil, we recommend starting off with a low dosage. If you're still not feeling a sense of balance, consider raising the dose in increments of two to five MG of CBD. 

 

Sublingual (Under the Tongue)

In our opinion, the best way to consume organic CBD oil is sublingually (under your tongue).

 

This is because the mucous membranes under your tongue can easily absorb CBD, making for an effective dosing method.
